The Good Friday liturgy begins at 12:15 p.m. followed by a Good Friday Organ Recital: Le Chemin de la Croix (The Stations of the Cross) by Marcel Dupré; Alan Strong, Director of Music, Organist, at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
Considered Dupré’s most ambitious and monumental work, Le Chemin de la Croix is a set of musical illustrations of the 14 Stations of the Cross. Maintaining the traditional order of the Stations of the Cross, Dupré masterfully controls the tension and balance of the entire musical composition, progressing from the introductory frenzy of the first station (“Jesus is condemned to death”), through the painful journey and the ever-increasing intensity of the three Falls, propelling the drama to the climax in the 11th station (“Jesus is nailed to the cross”), when the nails are hammered into the cross, while intervening movements provide interludes of repose and meditation, such as the poignant and beautiful “Jesus meets his mother”. In the final movement (“Jesus is placed in the sepulcher”) the drama culminates with a somber funeral march being magically transformed into a sublime and ethereal theme of eternal life.
Come and experience this very powerful and dramatic organ work, presented on the magnificent 45-rank American Classic organ at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, with Alan Strong as organist. The organ music will begin at approximately 1:15, concluding at approximately 2:45p.m. Those who are not able to arrive for the beginning, or stay to the end, are welcome to come and go quietly, incorporating this into their Good Friday meditations.
