Like many people I have been moved by the images of people walking through or being rescued from floodwaters in Houston and southeast Texas. Since Friday I have followed friends and colleagues as they have watched waters rise into their homes causing them to evacuate. Like everyone I am moved to make a response. At this point the most effective thing we can do is to donate money to Episcopal Relief and Development, the Red Cross, and support local efforts directed towards the people of the greater Houston area.

There will be many opportunities to help in the future. Bishop Doyle and the Episcopal Diocese of Texas are already responding in a variety of ways and are making plans for future efforts.

As we respond through the means available to us let us also pray:

Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: Let the cry of those in misery and need come to you, that they may find your mercy present with them in all their afflictions; and give us we pray, the strength to serve them for the sake of him who suffered for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
