Since the beginning of the year a committee of Saint Andrew’s members and I have been engaged in the work of searching for a new Director of Music.
At Saint Andrew’s we have identified Anglican liturgical worship that instructs, comforts, renews, and challenges through prayer, music, the Eucharist, and the beauty of our worship space as one of our values. We also have identified as one of our goals “to offer liturgy that reflects the glory of God and instills confidence in our Christian faith.” One of our objectives for this is “building on Saint Andrew’s strong musical heritage by strengthening our current music ministry and creating new music ministries and events.” Last year, the vestry listed as one of its ten-year targets a goal “to serve as a cultural hub” for the community. Worship and music are important to our life as a congregation.
The search committee conducted a nationwide search and during the process interviewed five candidates, two of whom we brought to Saint Andrew’s to play the organ, work with the choir, and meet with lay leaders and me.
I am now very happy to report that Dr. Linda Patterson will be our next Director of Music. Though we had a nationwide search, it turns out that Linda was just down the road from us in Brenham, where she has been serving as the Director of Music at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church. In addition to serving at Saint Peter’s she is the head of the Division of Music for the Diocese of Texas which means she plans the music for diocesan council, organizes the annual diocesan choral festival, and organizes the diocesan summer music camp for youth.
I am very grateful for the work of Dan Beto, Linda Ford, Jim Kracht, Stephanie McCartney, John Vilas, and Judy Winn who all served as the Director of Music Search Committee since February, though I am saddened that Judy was not able to see the fruit of her work and what our music ministry will become. I am also grateful for the chancel choir for meeting with the candidates, and for the support of the vestry.
Linda will bring great gifts for ministry to Saint Andrew’s and help us fulfill our values and goals as a downtown church in a vibrant and growing region of Texas. She will begin her work with us on October 1st. Please see the accompanying biography below for more information about her. We look forward to welcoming Linda in October!
